The following symptoms are the ones generally associated with peroneal nerve damage. However, please note that tingling, numbness, and weakness can be caused by conditions other than peroneal nerve damage; only a medical exam will determine the true cause.
- Tingling, or a sensation of “pins and needles” on the top of the foot or on the outer part of the upper or lower leg. While tingling may only indicate some minor irritation to the peroneal nerve that will clear up on its own, consulting a doctor is always advised to make sure that it is indeed a minor problem. Otherwise, without a clear understanding of the this symptom, further damage could occur.
- Numbness in the same areas noted above. Remarks above apply; consult a doctor.
- Measurable weakness of the ankles or feet. Remarks above apply; consult a doctor.
- Tendency to trip while walking. Medical consultation is crucial.
- Slapping sound with each step taken. Medical consultation is crucial.
- Inability to hold the foot in a horizontal position – indicating drop foot. Medical consultation is crucial.
- Tendency for toes to drag while walking. Medical consultation is crucial.
